Climate Training for Product Managers and Digital Designers for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), a ministerial department of the Government of the UK

DWP Digital wanted its product managers and designers to understand the environmental cost of their work, and know what to do about it. We built and delivered the programme to do exactly that.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is a ministerial department of the Government of the United Kingdom. It is responsible for welfare, pensions and child maintenance policy. It is the biggest public service department of the government.

Type of project

DWP Digital's teams build large-scale government services every day, but most didn't know the environmental cost of that work, or what they could do about it. The challenge was to make sustainability feel concrete and useful to civil servants, something they could act on, rather than another compliance box to tick.

Approach

We designed a programme of three modules and four live sessions over two months, covering the environmental impact of digital, low-carbon product practices, and how to influence internal stakeholders. Content drew from the Climate Product Leaders Playbook, with discussions and assignments both during and between sessions. Everyone left with a personal climate action plan, plus a shared plan for their function.

Results

The biggest learning gains came in understanding digital sustainability practices and their impact. Within weeks of the programme ending, participants had started conversations in their own teams about putting those practices to work, and several committed to 90-day personal action plans.
